Welcome Peanut

two thousand seven
ushers in a full new year
and avian friend

With the new year, we have adopted a new friend into our family. He is actually my son's Christmas present -- a parakeet (or budgie for those of you down under) named Peanut. I know, when Pepsi our hamster died a few months back I swore I'd never own another caged animal. But this seems different than a rodent somehow, and I though I'd give him a try. Plus, the top two things on my 9-year old's Christmas list were a Nano iPod and a parakeet. Without hesitation, the parakeet won out. So, here he is. And i must say, I am enjoying him quite a bit! He's a sweet little fellow.

Happy New Year All!

Ohh I love him! I had two for many years.. a blue male parakeet named BB King and a white female with touches of blue on her wings named Sky. They were so sweet! '

I gave Kayliana and Kai two miniature bunnies . The bunnies are doing great and the kids are loving them.

katie - oh nice! maybe you can help me, then. we did some research before choosing him and what we read said that a healthy bird will be very playful and chatty. we thought we were choosing well, and although he's sweet, he pretty much just sits on the perch all day with one or two chirps! he's visiting the vet on Friday for his first check-up...but what did you experience?

thanks mary and pauline!

Okay, I may change my tune on birds now. He's a cutie alright. Please don't take him in any coal mines soon. Pepsi?

you can take it slow. a picture is not the same as being face to face with one i'm sure.

coal mines? not sure of the reference here.

Pepsi. Ugh. She was cute too. We had two hamsters. One attacked the other, so we got rid of the attacker. Then Pepsi hung on for another year. Cute as can be, but geez did she smell!

You haven't heard "the parakeet in the coal mine" analogy? It's used for environmental references. They used parakeets to test the levels of unsafe chemicals in mines. If it died, then it was deemed unsafe.
