Spoiled
As a single mom for the last three years I've been a little spoiled. I live in a town home community and have been here for six years. After we became friendly with a few neighbors the lawn mowing became sort of a community affair among a few of us. When Scott or Jay or Chuck pulled out his mower, the other friends' lawns received the mowing benefit. I was never part of that deal because I'm allergic to mowed grass. So, my then "other half" did it. Then our mower died.
Before we replaced it the separation occurred. And my lawn has been being mowed by these kind fellas ever since. Now, don't think me a moocher. I gave money or gift cards and thank you notes...and verbal thank yous galore. But still, each time I heard that mower I felt both relief and a torrent of guilt wash over me.
Since last summer one of the guys has moved and the other is working out of town most weekends. And as I sit here listening to a distant mower on this lovely spring day I find myself in a bit of a pickle: to buy or not to buy a mower?
Couldn't I just pay the young lad who knocks on my door? It's really not a big yard after all.
But the green blades are already creeping past my ankle.

Blogger ate my comment and it was a good one.
Anyway, I don't think it's a bad idea if you paid a kid in the neighborhood to mow for you. It teaches him about jobs & responsibility. And it gets you out of mowing and making your allergies act up.
I should probably figure out how to mow our lawn even though Mr. ARM does it for us. Just in case.
Pay the child! They all need sending money! I have paid a neighbor boy to rake for me. :)
lol@ sending money... still :) spending sends it into the flow!
Hmm, just make sure it gets cut somehow. I'd be willing to bet you can find some kid to do it for a decent price. Check online for a used electric mower. I got a used one on Craigslist for $70.
I am moved by the neighbors each helping one another. To be able to capture that in a time capsule would be soooo grand. Everything will work out for you.
arm - hate when a comments gets gobbled up. yeah, i think i'm leaning towards that. the other thought is to see if the other single mom in the neigborhood wants to buy it together and we could share the mower.
knowing how to mow the lawn is a good idea :)
katie - funny :) yes, i may just do that. the thing is that i don't want my boys to think that they'll get paid when it's their turn!
egan - electric mower? huh, runs on batteries?
pauline - yeah, i feel pretty lucky to have some great neighbors :)
Life's too short to mow grass, buy a goat!
shrink wrapped scream - welcome, and thanks for stopping by. a goat's an excellent idea, indeed!
I say pay the kid! It's simpler, no?
Oh, I like that comment about getting a goat. Not a bad idea...
seb - yeah, i think i'm leaning that way, but in the long run, it may be better to just invest in the lawn mower. or a goat :)
