No New Bike...Yet
I spent over two hours at the bike store today and left without a bike. It was an enjoyable two hours though, spent with a highly attractive and kind member of the male species, Dennis. I got measured. Then measured again. I tested bikes on the trainers. We made adjustments here there and everywhere. I tested on the trainers again. I braved the fierce cold and wind and tested two bikes outside whilst dodging traffic coming to and fro to the adjacent bowling alley.
The bottom line is that the bike I want, which is an incredible deal, an excellent bike, and is last year's model...is the tiniest fraction too big. The fit is everything I've been told. I could get away with it, but when spending a good chunk of change, you want it to fit just right. The other bike I tested fit really well, but the model and componentry are not really what I want. So? Since I've been trying to make this decision since August I decided a few more days won't kill me.
Dennis will try and find the model I want in the size I need and call me Monday. Since it's last year's model this could be tricky.
Alas, I wait.

I had no idea one was fitted that closely for a bike! Good luck on your quest!
I know! It's a science, truly! Thank you!
So the Giant OCR1 didn't fit? The fit is very important so it's best to hold off like you did. I know exactly what you mean about the opposite sex thing. I had my bike fitted with a woman and the slightest touches were nice. Damn you women and your soft touches.
The one in the store was a small (about a 50). I could make it work, but almost pushing it on the reach from the seat to the hoods. and that's with the seat adjusted forward. I really need an XS for the right fit.
giggle, giggle, blush.
How tall are you? I think my K2 road bike is a 55-57 and I'm 6'1. I suppose a 50 could be right. Happy hunting.
Yes, you might as well get it exactly as you want it. Hope Dennis calls w/what you want.
mary - thank you! me too!
egan - i'm 5'4". a 48 is about what i need. thanks!
Let us know what you're thinking of getting! It's so exciting, biking is the greatest! Very happy to see that you are taking time, like you say, no need to rush these things, important to get something that's just right. Did you check craigslist, you can find super deals on there, depends where you live though.
Hey Seb! No, I didn't check craiglist. Good idea though! It is very exciting. This is something I've wanted to do for years. It feels like a dream to actually be getting it.
Your last comment to me sounds as if you expect me to send you a size 48 Giant. Was that your intention? If so, what's your mailing address?
egan - you are right on. i'll be checking my mailbox :)
