Darndest Things

"sometimes i have mixed emotions about my friend the clock."

this is what my 9 year-old said to me as he was getting ready for bed tonight. what the? did he just step out of reality and voice some script from the sequel to Time Travelers?

i asked him what he meant, assuming it was some goofy line from a tv show that i spend too much energy trying to get him not to watch.
nope. he was having a moment. a moment of honesty. of bright eloquence. of amazing realness that only finds itself in the hearts of children.

a moment of mixed emotions about something that runs our lives, day in day out. even at 9, he can feel that. he didn't like what the clock said. 8:34. he didn't like it one bit. it meant the day was done and sleep was near.

1:00 on saturday. that's what he wanted his friend the clock to say. 1:00 on saturday would mean an hour of running and kicking his heart out with his friend the soccer ball would have just come to an end. an hour playing with friends, being cheered on by coaches and parents alike. that glorious, satisfying hour.

they sure do say the darndest things.

I'll tell ya, this really makes me think about how perceptive kids are and how much more they get sooner than we think. It's written beautifully, you are such a wonderful momma. Rockin pic too.
