What Do You Love Most About Fall?

Fall is my favorite season. I love the cool, crisp smells and the colors of the leaves as they change. I love hiking, and hearing and feeling the dead, fallen leaves crunching under my feet. This always fills me with a giddy youthful feeling. I usually end up running gleefully pushing the crunchy brown leaves along with my feet.

Being outside in the fall is invigorating. But there's something about being inside – in my warm, cozy home with my pjs on, a good cup of coffee and a book that won't let me go – that just feels so good. Maybe it's nostalgia – the anticipation of the holidays coming and all the indoor traditions that take place. Smells of cookies baking, candles burning, and preparing comfort foods like barley-lentil stew.

I even love the end of daylight savings time. When night comes early and time itself helps to draw my day to a close, allowing me to nestle my boys into bed with greater ease since the sunlight isn't beckoning them to stay up.

There's something peaceful about the fall. Something warm and inviting and invigorating.

So, what do you love most about fall?

Ahhh... I am so with you g. This is hands down my favorite season. I would have to say the thing I love most about fall is that it reminds me of the cycles of life, death and rebirth. It helps me remember, at the most fundamental level, that we are part of a much much larger plan. The beauty of the "death" we see this season helps to counter the negative connotation of "death" that is the general response in our society to the end of life.

On a lighter note, I too love the hikes, as you know. I love headin out with the pooch and the hubby and now the little punkass, bundled in our coats, taking deep breaths of fresh air and the gorgeous transformation of the seasons!

Great post. Like a gift.

ps... I was at the inlaws when you called... so sorry I wasn't here lovey.

It's my favorite season too. My favorite things are the smell of the fallen leaves composting on the ground, and the slight chill in the air that tells you Winter's on the way.

I love it when you can sit (or lie) in the sun and feel warmed by it, but not so much that it's uncomfortable.

It's absolutely my favorite too. I love the crispness...the light...my sweaters...walks...coastal storms...the rain...I love it all.

What I love about the fall (Autumn it is always called here in New Zealand) also holds true for Spring (I forget, do you crazy northern hemispherians call that something else too?). To me the mystery and magic of these seasons is that they have become more...transitional. The months of Summer and Winter seem to have spread out, and the in-betweens have become that much more special for it. They seem like...doors! Pretty painted doors at that.

Yeah I'm a fallguy too. Much like spring, it sharpens the senses. Cold wind, bright sun, the crunch of leaves gilding the gutters, the smells, the sounds, and your breath suddenly frosting the air. winter and summer are like sense deprivation tanks - they either numb you or make you lazy. I like Jake's comments about them being 'transitional' month - never thought of them that way before.

i think it's amazing that although we span across coasts, and countries, and hemispheres, fall is the favorite for all of us.

tiger - i agree with the miracle of the death and life. every fall i marvel at the fact that the leaves know when to turn, when to let go, when to die.

mur - yes, the warmth of the sun penetrating the chill on your face or head or arms...hmmm.

cin - i didn't think about the sweaters. i'm a big zip up cardigan fan. warm and cozy :)

jake - it's funny, one thing i wish for every fall and spring is that they were longer. perhaps the solution is to move to NZ?

simon - summer really is a sense deprivation tank. i love how you phrased that. the older i get, the less i like summer. the heat makes me tired and lazy and cranky and irritable. though i am growing more fond of winter each year.

thank you all for coming to visit...and for sharing!

Happy Fall!
