Six Weird Things

No, I haven't been tagged. But I thought I'd take it upon myself to share six weird things about me. I've been reading a lot of weird things about other people on their blogs, and it's had me thinking, "What's weird about me?" Honestly now, would I actually confess the weirdest of weird? Mmmm, probably not. So those that follow will have to do.

Weird Thing One
My pinky toes on both feet have almost no nail on them at all. Not as a result of some strange happening. God just said it, and it was so.

Weird Thing Two
I like to be alone.... a lot. I'm a hard core introvert. Sometimes when I'm alone, I obsess about when that alone time is going to come to an end and I'll have to re-engage people. Weird, I know.

Weird Thing Three
I can't give blood. I was originally diagnosed with a form of anemia as a baby and nearly died since I wasn't producing my own red blood cells. Despite the fact that the Yale hospital doctor who treated me wrote me a letter in college stating that they now think it was a virus, the folks who could use my blood want nothing to do with it.

Weird Thing Four
About two years ago I started developing food allergies. Avocado, swiss cheese, and certain types of apples. The latest? Flax seed. A year before that I discovered that I'm allergic to the active ingredient in the allergy medicines Claritin and Clarinex - loratadine. Now how's that for weird!!!

Weird Thing Five
I always lock the car doors when I'm driving. It's sort of like an OCD thing. After I get in, start the car, and buckle up, I lock the doors. Could you imagine if I had a car with manual locks and I had to climb through to all four doors every time I got in the car? Oi!

Weird Thing Six
I can sleep for an extraordinarily long time. Eleven or twelve hours is a piece of cake. I've wondered how long I could sleep if there wasn't something that I had to get up for. I'd like to try that out someday soon.

For kicks I asked my 9-year old son what he thought was weird about me. His reply was this, "You don't look your age. And you're not very neat." And there ya have it! Thankfully, after further probing, he did explain that he thinks I look younger than I am! Phew!

Not bad wierd stuff. My daughter who is 22 recently started having terrible food allergies. How do you identify it so clearly?

Cin, that's a riot. It's ridiculous trying to put nail polish on those things!

Hi Mary - sorry to hear about your daughter. Ugh, it's very frustrating and a little scary. Well, the avocados was the strangest and most severe. For years my mouth would get slightly itchy when I ate avocado or swiss cheese. I don't particularly like either of them, so it wasn't often. But it wasn't until I broke out into hives and my eyes almost swelled shut that I discovered that I was seriously allergic to avocados. It was actually after using a Bath and Body Works hand lotion containing avocado oil. Figuring it out took about two weeks, but by process of elimination, and then re0entering the things I discontinued using, it was clear that it was the avocado oil.

Since then I don't touch swiss cheese either, and certain types of apples make my mouth itch.

The first time it happened with flax was in October while I was eating a bagel at Panera Bread. At the time I didn't know it was the flax, but I stopped eating the bagel. Then in November I bought a box of Go Lean Crunch with Honey and Flax. I took about three bites and my mouth got very itchy. I assumed immiediately it was the flax becuase it was the only thing in both items that I hadn't eaten in between those two occasions.

If your daughter is having severe allergies to things that could be potentially life threatening (peanuts, shellfish, etc.) you may consider suggesting she go to an allergist for testing. Good luck and hope this helped :)

Too lazy to copy my initial comment over from my blog now, but, some additional comments:

I am also an introvert and I get quite anxious about having to engage people, most of the time. I often decline invitations to social gatherings (from experience I know it's best not to go when I'm like that). The weird thing is, I also get lonely and want to be with people... most of the time. It's a paradox.

Shame about avocados and swiss. I hope those allergies pass. But at least you've got goat's cheese, right?

My sister has suffered from food allergies a lot (including wheat), and I must say I hope it never happens to me. I've already started having mild problems with beer and wine in recent years, and that's enough to piss me off! Oh and lactose just won't do. But on the whole, I know I've been lucky.

Oh by the way, on the subject of weirdness, I'm trying to grow a beard (which by the way, is bloody miserable!), and keep pulling out hairs; already I have a hole on my chin (I'm hoping it will get covered up in time). Will I make it past a month? Tune in next week.

Thank you yes. That was very helpful. I've been trying to get her to an allergist. She doesn't live near me though and was going to school and working and just didn't give it the attention it needed. BUT she's done w/school for a little while so I will lay into her about again.

I so understand that loving to be alone bit. I like the house best now when there is no noise. Simply me being.... I love quiet. Not to say that I don't miss the kids but since they are not here.. well.. I enjoy my own company. I have difficulty sometimes accepting invitations because I know it will be noisy.

#6 is wierd to me... lol.. I'm thankful to get to sleep 6-7 hours of sleep.

hey friends - sorry i haven't been up on the comments here. oi - the holiday rush around has grabbed me by the neck and is choking me! make it stop!

mur - again, i truly get it. i have declined invites for the same reason. i feel yer pain. and so sorry about your sista -- it's a challenging scenario. i'm thankful i have yet to experience a life threatening allergy. oh - how's the beard going? promise i won't pull any out ;-)

mary - so glad it helped and i hope she goes and that it's helpful.

katie - yeah, weird it is. i actually get to sleep 12 hours every night. and i imagine if i did, then i wouldn't need that many hours anyway. i'm lucky to get 7 or so a night. but when i get the chance, 12 hours here i come! I can understand the noise aversion. that is actually part of what i don't like about crowds. sometimes when i'm with my boys i just wish i had a switch to turn down the volume! peace and quiet to you :)
